FEAture stonework

Feature stone transforms a house, building, or garden. It is a timeless addition to any project. There are so many different types, colours, shapes, and sizes of stone to choose from these days. Stone can also be laid either in a tight stack style or with mortar gaps.

The Stonework Process

  • STAGE 1 - SELECTIONS

Choose the type and brand of stone you want for your project, as well as the store you'd like to source it from. Choose the grout colour. Choose the style - tight stack (no gaps) or mortar gaps (with grout). Choose your grout colour (if you're wanting mortar gaps). It's highly recommended to view the stone in person (at the showroom) or request a sample (mailed to you) when choosing stone.

  • STAGE 2 - MEASURE + QUOTE

Arrange a time for me to visit the project site. I will measure the area and provide you with a quote, usually within a few days. You can find Mountaintop Masonry's rates below (in the FAQs). We can then confirm a start date for your stone project.

  • STAGE 3 - JOB COMMENCEMENT

Work will begin on your stonework project. Cuts are made on the stone to ensure the stone looks aesthetically pleasing and as natural as possible. A hammer and grinder are used during this process. Stone is installed using strong adhesive. It can get rather loud and pretty messy. However, I use an extractor fan, which helps to remove a lot of the dust.

  • STAGE 4 - GROUTING (if required)

If you've chose to have mortar gaps (like in the picture above), the grouting is the next step. You can choose between a 6mm to 10mm gap. Colours to choose from are: white, off white, and grey.

  • STAGE 5 - COMPLETION + HANDOVER

Voila! Your stonework project is complete. I'll take some photos for my portfolio.

FAQs

  • Feature stonework varies in price.

The price depends on the stone you choose, if you want tight stack or mortar gaps (grout), and of course the size of the project.

At Mountaintop Masonry, here are my rates:

    • Tight stack (no gaps) = $400.00 - $420.00 +gst per sqm

    • Mortar gaps (6-10mm) = $370.00 +gst per sqm

These rates include adhesive and mortar (grout) but do not include stone.

The stone itself is an additional cost - you can either provide the stone yourself or alternatively I can source it for you. On average, natural stone varies from $80.00 - $130.00 +gst per sqm.

It is always recommended to order approx. 15-20% more stone than the actual measurements of the project to ensure the best pieces of stone are selected and to ensure you have enough. This is really important, as when ordering stone, you want to order it from the same batch otherwise there can be colour, size and shape variations.

Stone delivery is also an additional cost. Stone suppliers often have different delivery rates.

Please note - Some feature stonework is charged on a day/hourly rate. This is because it can be fiddly and very time consuming.

On these types of projects, it is not uncommon to only complete 1sqm of stonework per day. For example, stone chimneys, arches, corners. This will be discussed with you when I initially visit the site and provide a quote.

  • Generally, Mountaintop Masonry lays anywhere between 1.5 - 2.5 sqm per day.

However, some feature stonework can be fiddly and time consuming, such as stone chimneys, arches, and corners. With these types of projects, it's not uncommon for 1 sqm to take the full day.

  • There are so many places to find and purchase stone from.

Some places Mountaintop Masonry sources stone from are:

If you'd prefer, I can source it for you and arrange payment and delivery.
